We’re a wine shop and a pub.

Come and browse in Vino Gusto and now you can stay for a drink and a meal too. We’re open every day.

We opened our wine shop during lockdown (it’s no secret that we’re a little obsessed with wine) and we’re the only independent wine shop in Bury St Edmunds. Our pub is open again and the wine shop continues too.

The One Bull building has seen many different uses over the years. From its origins in the 1500’s as an inn for those on pilgrimage to the Abbey, it has also operated as a brewhouse and a stables amongst many iterations of what we these days call a pub. The common theme is hospitality and that’s what we’re all about so we’re viewing this as another era in the pub’s long (and sometimes colourful) journey through the history of time.

Our wine shop is run by our Gusto beverage manager Jake. His wine knowledge is second to, well to be honest, not very many people. Whether you’d like to pick up a straightforward bottle to go with dinner, are looking to buy a case of fine wines or something in between, we’ve got the right wine for you.

The One Bull has won wine awards for many reasons in the past. One of these is the way in which we lay out our wine list. We don’t structure it by country or grape – we use style sections to make it easier for you to choose and we’ve followed this in designing the layout of our shop. So, for example, if you like crisp, dry white wines then there’s a section just for you.

We’ve deliberated carefully over which wines to stock and this will evolve over time. We have 150+ wines for you to choose from. If you’re drinking in with us then you can choose from any of our wine shop wines to drink by the bottle – just add £10 to the wine shop price.  Don’t just take our word for it – we’re listed on jancisrobinson.com and in their words, we ‘stock a great selection of well-priced wine’.

You can browse in the shop at your leisure, pick up an old favourite or feel free to pick Jake’s considerable wine brain (he’s currently studying for his WSET Wine Diploma but remains remarkably human). His career started with Gusto before he headed to The Old Bridge in Huntingdon to work with Master of Wine, John Hoskin. He moved on to set up and run The Brewers in Rattlesden and returned to Gusto to specialise in all things drinks related in 2019. Ask Jake for suggestions, ideas or for help to find something new that you haven’t tried before. Or use our Click & collect service to order online. If you’d like us to bring your order out to your car, just tick the curbside pickup option. Free local delivery when you spend £25 or more.

To keep everyone protected, we limit the number of customers in the shop to 2 at a time. Please respect social distancing rules. Payment is by card only. If you want to reserve something to collect or place a phone order,  please e-mail help@vinogusto.co.uk or call 01284 848220 (during opening hours).

We regularly select some wines that we think are interesting and let you know why – Vino Gusto recommends.

When the mood takes us at Vino Gusto, Jake selects 6 of our wines for you at a special case price. As the good weather returns, so does our Barbecue box. 6 wines for £60.

We want to know what you’re planning for dinner too. Tweet us what you’re cooking up (or ordering in) and Jake will recommend a couple of different wines. Food and wine pairing made easy by your friendly, independent wine shop.

Although we’re a wine shop we have our own vac-packed negronis and other classic cocktails, Brewshed cans & mini kegs, a range of gins (including local suppliers Norfolk Gin & Suffolk Distillery) plus other spirits, Crude coffee packs & pods, soft drinks & gift vouchers.

Jake lives and breathes all things beverage related and can’t exist without the coffee machine switched on so if you’d like a great, locally roasted coffee to take home with you, just ask.

A note from us personally…

Although we’re trying to remain upbeat, this is a massively challenging and unparalleled time to be in this trade. We’re an independent, family owned business comprising 5 pubs and a craft brewery. Having to keep our pub doors closed goes against everything we know and we are fighting hard to keep the business protected and able to come out the other side with jobs for our team into what will undoubtedly be uncharted territory and a new world for hospitality.

We know that many of you are experiencing tough times too. We’d like to thank everyone who has sent us supportive messages and offers of kindness, they are truly appreciated. And thank you to every customer who shops at Brewshed, Vino Gusto and any of our pubs – every single visit is hugely valued.

David & Roxane Marjoram
