When the mood takes us at Vino Gusto, Jake selects 6 of our wines for you at a special case price.
By popular demand, Gusto picks six sees the return of ‘The barbecue box’. 6 wines for £60.
Perfect for the current weather and chosen to work well with the sunshine and barbecued foods, here are our picks:
2019 `G` Garganega, Alpha Zeta, Veneto, Italy
A lovely, crisp Italian white. Light enough to enjoy as a refreshing aperitif while you get the barbecue going, but with enough character and texture to pair with food. Try a whole sea bass grilled with lemons or perhaps a spicy, marinated chicken thigh.
2019 Txakoli, Bodega Agerre, Basque Country, Spain
Txakoli – the quaffing wine of San Sebastián. Head to Spain’s mountainous Basque Country and you’ll find the locals swigging this spritzy, zesty wine in all of the coolest pintxos bars. Should you find yourself trapped in home during a global health pandemic with the next flight to Bilbao looking some way off, this wine is the next best thing. Enjoy in a deck chair with a tin of good sardines.
2018 Rioja Blanco, El Coto, Spain
This white Rioja is a top seller across our Gusto Pronto pubs. It has a great, zingy acidity and lots of lovely, tropical fruit flavours. Perfect for simply grilled garlicky prawns.
2019 `r` rosato, alpha zeta, veneto, italy
Floral, fragrant and fresh. Wimbledon may have been cancelled this year but you can still get your fix of strawberries & cream… Brilliant by itself or to accompany a grilled salmon fillet and a light, citrussy salad.
2018 Beaujolais-Villages, Dominique Morel, France
Our importer has always enjoyed telling us that Dominique Morel’s philosophy is to make wines that he enjoys drinking. This was confirmed last year when travelling to meet the man himself in his winery (garage). We were greeted by a rather rotund gentleman, who took great pleasure in tasting his wines alongside us. We were taken aback by his ‘simple’ Beaujolais-Village. A fruity, elegant wine that is best enjoyed slightly chilled, perhaps with some hard cheeses and most definitely in the sunshine.
2016 Rioja Crianza, Bodegas LAN, Spain
Alongside the Rioja Blanco above, this wine has been a Gusto favourite for some years. It is packed full of fruity flavour. Think strawberries and cranberries but with hints of toffee and vanilla through the clever, balanced use of oak. If you’re really going for it with the barbecue, Rioja is a classic pairing for lamb. We suggest smothering a joint in butter and thyme and roasting it on coals, low and slow.
